One of the most memorable characters for me is Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. She shows girls that they can be smart and that they don’t have to spend a ton of time trying to look pretty if they don’t want to. When Hermione first got to Hogwarts people didn’t expect her to do well because she was muggle-born, and she was bullied during the whole series for it, but she proved everyone wrong and became the best in every class. I think that Hermione is a really good role model for young girls because she shows that other people's expectations don’t define you. Hermione is a really unique character because she was never there to serve as a love interest for Harry, and they were just best friends which is pretty rare. I also love how she’s so willing to do anything to protect her friends and family, like when she modified her parents memories and made it so that they didn’t even remember her just so the death eaters wouldn’t get to them. The last thing I’m going to talk about is how she saved the day so many times. Harry and Ron would have been nowhere without Hermione. She figured out how to destroy the horcrux. She figured out that what Fluffy was guarding was the philosopher's stone. She told Harry and Ron that Slytherin’s Monster was a Basilisk, when she was petrified. When you think about it Harry would never have been able to save the world without Hermione. Overall I think that Hermione is the best character in the Harry Potter series, and one of the most memorable characters that I’ve read about.
James just moved from B.C. to a school in Ontario. As a grade 8 student, moving half way through a school year, he's having a hard time adjusting to all this change. He feels the reasons for his move are private, and he's not comfortable discussing them with anyone, but people keep asking about it. He feels like after the first two weeks in his new class he doesn't want to be friends with anyone. His teacher, along with the work being assigned, seems so different from what he was doing out west. James is becoming very stressed out. Just recently, he verbally abused his bus driver on his way to school and was given a suspension.
The biggest problem that James has in this story is that everything is different than he's used to and since he hasn't made any friends he hasn't had anyone to talk to about it.
A strategy that James could use to help his mental health is to tell someone how he feels so that somebody can help him when he's feeling stressed so that he doesn't end up freaking out again.
What would advice would you give James or someone else in this situation if they were to talk to you about it and why would it help them?
If I were to make a soundtrack for a movie of Orbiting Jupiter, two of the songs that I would choose would be A Little To Much by Shawn Mendes and Any Other World by Mika.
The first song I would choose if I were making a soundtrack of Orbiting Jupiter would be A Little Too Much by Shawn Mendes. I would choose this song because it’s about how everyone has bad days and gets sad or angry sometimes, and how it’s okay to talk about it when you feel like that and that you can’t keep pretending that everything's fine when it’s not, because eventually it will all become to much to handle. It reminds me of this book because at the beginning of the book Joseph wasn’t ready to tell anyone about what happened to him but eventually he realised that he could trust Jack and his parents and that it was okay to talk about it.. https://youtu.be/Dvv6OkU874k
The next song I would choose would be Any Other World by Mika. I would choose this song because it’s about how sometimes things happen to you and because of that one event you have to completely change how you live your life. I think that this connects with the story because I think that that’s what it’s like for Joseph with all the things that happened with Maddie, then going to Stone Mountain and moving in with Jack and his family. https://youtu.be/-JRvviNXmWY
If I were to cast a movie for the book Orbiting Jupiter I would choose the actor Asa Butterfield as Joseph because I think that he did a good job as Hugo Cabret in Hugo, and as Jacob in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and both of those characters are kind of shy and keep to themselves, a lot like Joseph.
I would choose Jared Gilmore for Jack because his character, Henry, on Once Upon A Time kind of reminds me of Jack becuase Henry is one of the only charecters who trusted Emma at first and he was always ready to stand up to Regina to help Emma even when everyone else in Storybrook was to afraid to dissagree with her. Jack kind of reminds me of Henry because Jack is the same way when the vice principal talks to him about Joseph
As an audience member to Orbiting Jupiter, how do you think Joseph's character has changed from chapter 1 to chapter 2?
I think Joseph's character has changed because in chapter 2 people are actually starting to try to understand him so he's starting to be a bit more open to people and when we first met him he was really quiet and kept to himself a lot. In chapter 1 people always judged him because he had made some bad decisions and he kept to himself a lot because of it. In chapter 2 there are people that don`t care about his past and he becoming more confident and being more open to Jack.
How do you think Joseph`s changed.
Throughout the first part of chapter one, many people have preconceived notions about Joseph, from his new family, the bus driver, and even the vice principal and teachers. Identify the labels that you think have been placed upon Joseph and how that affects the character in the book.
The vice principal acts like Joseph is a bad kid and like he's mentally unstable and dangerous, but he's just been through a lot of hard things. The teachers seem to be a little scared of him but they are actually kind of nice to him unlike the bus driver and the principal.
So far Grade 8 has been really challenging because I haven't been able to keep up with all the work especially since I missed three days last week. The teacher is ok, but he's a little strict for my taste, and he also doesn't have much of a sense of humour which makes it really hard to pay attention in class.
